A little more than a year ago we decided that we wanted to ride The Tevis http://www.teviscup.org. We did our do diligence. Made a plan for conditioning ourselves. Looked for suitable horses and got familiar with the trails. We even moved to the area to be able to really train on the actual course. Our plan is to ride in 2014 but since it such a grueling challenge it takes a lot of preparation, on many different levels (mental, physical, nutritional, build a good partnership with your horse, learn about the right equipment etc. . )
Last winter we discovered that
many trails are completely closed for about five months. As a preparation for
this season we´ve been looking for opportunities to keep training during the winter.
The solution we came up with was to find trails that are open all year round.
In California there are many places where you can ride your horse all year.
Just not in the mountains. We´ve decided to train our horses in Napa (Phil
lived there before we met) so for a couple of weeks we´ve made preparations to
make that happen. Napa is only two hours away from our home but the climate is
totally different.
